Perhaps this would cause those that do worry about their post count to be sure and put threads in the proper forum. As for Windows questions, they could go in the Miscellaneous forum since the description says "Any questions or Linux discussion that does not fit in any of the other technical areas".

Many other forums don't count community posts. For example, TechIMO only counts posts from the "hardware" forums, not the community/distributed computing/suggestions. It works out great. So that, when someone answers someone else's post...they know that the person with 5k posts has a great deal of experience. And that system works...usually high post counts means tech experience.
edit/ I also believe the karma thing wouldn't work out for the good of the forum...it would be a popularity contest and would be abused by some posters.

I also agree with not counting coffee lounge posts. That's a very good idea. It doesn't make sense for anyone to be labeled a "resident guru" if half or more of their posts didn't go toward trying to help someone with a Linux related problem or question.

Fair dos - If you delete existing Coffee Lounge threads I'll be down to 332 posts. Still, I agree with not counting them. I don't post during the evening, so I can only increment my post count very slowly. I'm assuming there are more 'newbie' posts in the evening?

- 07-26-2005 #28I'm not sure a retroactive count is possible. Wasn't this forum moved from one database to another once before? If so, are the Coffee Lounge post records from that point kept? I imagine what J was planning on doing was just making all posts from this point forward not count... but correct me if I'm wrong.

Nah, I'm not going to re-adjust post counts although it would be possible to knock up a script to do it.
