Update... for some reason, I'm able to ping the .org site tonight with the /etc/hosts entries recommended by Jason totally removed.
I can only guess that it was some problem ...

Update... for some reason, I'm able to ping the .org site tonight with the /etc/hosts entries recommended by Jason totally removed.
I can only guess that it was some problem somewhere between me and the LinuxForums.org servers, as I've not done anything to fix the issue here, and Core Wizard said he responds to threads when problems are fixed, so it must not have been anything he's done, as he did not respond to this thread.
Thanks a bunch to those of you that offered assistance...
