I'm not a big fan of customizations to the board software.

Implementing customizations causes too many problems when you try to update to the latest version of vBulletin, and it can cause admins to put off any board upgrading due to potential problems. Now if it were built directly into vBulletin I wouldn't be opposed to the feature.

The board administrator has to determine the risk involved and whether or not to take it, so "is it too big?" really depends upon his/her own feelings about it.

But yes, customizations can certainly break upgrades.
