Can anyone tell me how to search for a phrase using the forums search [utility], such that it only returns threads/posts that contain the phrase?...

Click on Search Link at Top panel and Enter the phrase to be searched. There are a lot of options in Advanced Search.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Sorry, but it's not working for me...

Please "feel free" to try any method on the following phrase (or any other phrase) to see if it returns only posts containing the exact phrase:

    the following phrase

Since I have been a member of these forums, I have never been able to do this. All I ever get is [any and all posts] that use at least one of the individual words in the phrase -- except it also throws out small words, which defies the definition of "search by phrase"...

(And, yes - there are some very useful Advanced Search options...)

So far as I know, the search feature does not offer a search by phrase function. Maybe Core Wizard knows better and can reply if there is a way to do it.

I seem to remember Jason setting something up so we could search linuxforums using google.
that would enable searching by phrase, but I don't remember how he set it up.

Just go to Google advanced search
    Google Advanced Search
Type the phrase in the Exact Phrase box & then in the Domain box type www.linuxforums.org.

Yep, Google's advanced search is far more sophiticated than anything found within vBulletin's search routines.
