Inappropriate popup window

I received a VERY inappropriate pop-up window while using the forum at work. It was a full screen browser window with an upskirt shot of a chick with red knickers. The ad was something to do with meeting people in my area. I find this inappropriate for a technical forum. I am at work, it is lucky no one saw my screen. Secondly, this is not something I would want my children to see if I was browsing the forum at home. Thirdly this is going to put off any women from browsing the forum. It is sexist and offensive (not to me, but I am sure will be to many).

Additionally using Google Chrome, I can't resize the text entry window and text is not wrapping properly. Also when typing in the password in the page header to log in, my password is shown in the box instead of being obfuscated.

I've noticed if I come onto the forum without ad blockers turned on I have a hard time just logging on with all the pop ups, the one I get the most is facebook of sex sometimes just a bar on the right side of the screen others it pops up and takes over, this is the only forum I've come across that seems to be doing this (that is linux based forum), I've stopped using this forum as much as I used to, I let it go through my akregator feed and if there's someone I can help then I do, your 100% right there is no place for these types of ad's on a technical forum .

The best way to contact those in charge of any ads that are displayed on the site is by using the Contact Us link found in the lower-right corner of this page and others on the website. I've also forwarded a note through the proper channels regarding your concerns, along with a link to this thread.

I use adblock and noscript...

This is of course 3rd party, location specific, targeted advertising... for example if I disable adblock and noscript, I see lots of ads for ISPs, flights, flower delivery, insurance, travel, etc.

If I were to then spend a few hours browsing pr0n sites and come back here, I may start seeing... a different type of ad...

Short version: adblock, noscript + use an alternative search engine which doesn't track you.

Just FYI on the insinuating of someone browsing something like porn is pretty bold being you don't probably know myself or the op so the snide S.A. comment isn't appreciated and this is the big one for you I've gotten ad's like facebook of sex on a fresh load, brand spanky new H.D., so I guess that kinda blows your theory out of the water...............


ozar has a good point, I don't blame the forum cause it happens everywhere, heck I've gotten the side bar ad's for travel in my gmail before .................

You don't need a reinstall and a new HDD to just delete your cookies - doing that also doesn't change your IP address or ISP...

your statement was suggestive, like you'd only get those type of ad's if your visiting those sites which I believe you know that's not the case

really !!?!! I was making a base statement that those type of ad's can just pop up regardless of weather or not your visiting those type of sites,

I'm sure if we were having this conversation face to face we would have a better grasp of what each other were really saying, it's hard to figure how someone is coming across merely by viewing there typing, I admit I'm guilty of coming off looking like a butthead cause someone misunderstood what I was trying to come across with saying .

Browser privacy and security is quite a large and complex topic. If you are using Firefox, then there are many extensions which allow you to block scripting, third-party cookies and others. If you are using Chrome, or a different browser, then I understand that there are similar protective things to use.
One thing that is not commonly blocked is the so-called Flash Cookie. Not a cookie at all, but a Local Shared Object created by web pages, and not deleted by any of the 'normal' methods. This sort of super cookie will potentially identify you and your browser to various advertising sites across reboots and deletions of normal cookies, thus enabling them to recreate deleted cookies, and to target you with advertising whether you want them to or not.
As a Firefox user, there is a very good extension called BetterPrivacy which enables the deletion of these flash cookies, and, in conjunction with Adblock Plus and Noscript, provides a much better level or protection and privacy.
Of course, it is much more complex than that, but the recurring unwanted adverts may be because of Flash cookies.
If you can't install BetterPrivacy, then you could write your own extension, or simply delete the flash cookies manually. Typically they are stored here: /home/<username>/.macromedia
