hi, i'm using fedora 8. i am trying to install real player10.bin file. but it shows rpm file does not exist. what i have to do? Pls suggest me how to install.

Become root: su <enter_password> then try opening a terminal. Do chmod +x real player10.bin (assuming that's the name of the file). Then try ./real player10.bin . Again, make sure you are using the correct file name.

You are better off downloading the rpm from here and install it using the rpm command. Also make sure that you install compat-libstdc++-33 using yum so that realplayer works correctly.

Yes, I agree that Helix Player is perhaps better for Linux than Realplayer. However, I have another suggestion: why not use VLC? It opens practically everything, and does so with a minimum of fuss. It's not as glossy as Realplayer, but that makes it lighter and so I prefer it. Also, it comes complete with all the codecs you could ever dream of. You can download and install it using yum.

I think the *nix version of Realplayer is based on Helix Player anyway. The version of Realplayer for Linux is very basic, and these days VLC probably looks better than that!

Well, VLC still has a very basic GUI - but who needs GUI, anyway!

VLC Player is not available in default repos. You have to install Livna repository first.
Execute this

rpm -Uhv http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm

Install VLC Player :

yum -y install vlc

Just thought of something. Installing VLC is a great thing to do, and you can read practically everything with it very nicely, but I still advise you to install Helix Player as VLC won't read real video codecs (I think it's just about the only thing it won't read).
