[SOLVED] No sound in Kubuntu
Hey
I've just installed Kubuntu 8.10 and I don't seem to have any sound. KMix and alsamixer don't show any volume control so maybe it's a driver issue? I'm no good at sound issues so I don't know where to start...
I have included a screen shot of alsamixer and KMix as a picture tells a thousand words.Linux User #453176

I don`t see anything in that picture...it`s too small. Please post the following output of the command to see what sound card do you have.
first make sure inCode:/usr/sbin/hwinfo --sound
the volume is up and is not on mute and then i want to try this commands and tell me if you are hearing anythingCode:alsamixer
Code:aplay -Dplughw:0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav
then to see what version of alsa are you usingCode:speaker-test -c2 -Dplug:front:0 -twav
Code:cat /proc/asound/version

I need to know what sound card do you have. You can search to see if you have hwinfo
if you don`t have that tool hwinfo you can seach and install it. I am using OpenSuse. Search in package manager for it.Code:whereis hwinfo
You can also post
which is in /sbin this tool.Code:lspci
Cheers!

I have look in alsa soundcards and i don`t see this model VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A here to be supported.
The Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24/30 is supported by alsa as you can see here.
The VIA is using the module snd_hda_intel, and if i were you i disable this onboard sound from bios and then use the Cirrus Logic.
As you can see here you can install the latest alsa driver for this soundcard.
Cheers!

Disabling the VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A and booting is fine. But when I put the Cirrus back in my system boots up and I can log in but then I get the error message:
The system will then freeze before I have the opportunity to do anything. Any ideas?Code:phonon The audio playback device HDA VIA VT82xx (ALC861 Analog) does not work. Falling back to Sound Fusion CS46xx (CS46xx)

Just an update so I can mark this thread as solved.
I tried a third soundcard and it finally worked after a little configuration. I have no idea why it has been so difficult and hopefully the new version of Ubuntu that's due in a few weeks won't have the same problems!Linux User #453176
