Preferences in Video Editing Software?

Does anyone monitoring this forum have any preferences in video editting software that they care to expound upon? I want to edit two types of files:
a. music videos, and
b. movie videos from my Canon digital (still camera) [not to be confused with a digital camcorder].

Packages that I am curious about are listed below. Please, any reviews, comments, comparisons, or recommendations?

kino - http://kino.schirmacher.de/ and http://www.kinodv.org/
[I believe kino is limited in the input forumat's it accepts. For example, it won't accept the .avi movie files from my Canon digital (still) camera].

Cinelerra - http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3/
[This program looks massive - does one need a cray or a cluster to handle the processing load ?? ]

MainActor - http://www.mainconcept.com/index_flash.shtml
[commericial - but a free version comes with SuSE].

avidemux - http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/
[a great video editor, but not designed to support fade/in/out transitions between clips].

LiVES - http://www.xs4all.nl/~salsaman/lives/
[I've read it has some difficulty in sound and video synchronisation. But perhaps no worse than the other packages ?? ].

Open VIP
http://openvip.sourceforge.net/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/openvip

Jahshaka - http://www.jahshaka.org/
[possibly more for special effects ?? ].

LVE - http://lvempeg.sourceforge.net/

modesto - http://sourceforge.net/projects/modesto/

KDEnlive - http://kdenlive.sourceforge.net/

piave - http://modesto.sourceforge.net/piave/
[ is a render and effect engine for GNU/Linux. PIAVE has no GUI. It is used by KDEnlive and modesto]

PiTiVi - PiTiVi is a non-linear audio/video editor for GNU/Linux using the GStreamer multimedia framework. http://www.pitivi.org/ and http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=100591

Zwei Stein - a nonlinear video editor
http://www.zs4.net/
http://www.thugsatbay.com/tab/?q=

[Edit - 4-Oct-05 - added PiTiVi]
[Edit - 5-Oct-05 - added Zwei Stein

Some related URLs

While doing some google searches, I found the following URLs, that I believe are worth sharing:
A good wikibook on Linux in Film production
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Linux_in_film_production

Another Linux wiki book
http://www.brickfilms.com/wiki/index...ftware_-_Linux

Another short article from a linux forum:
http://www.linuxforum.com/forums/ind...howtopic=53452

Any comments/reviews and especially comparisons on these linux video multi-media packages would be appreciated.

I don't plan to maintain this thread

I did a couple edits to my original post, adding a couple of more packages that I discovered (but did not install). However I don't plan to maintain this thread any more. The lack of response clearly indicates linuxforums.org is not the forum to discuss video editing software.

Video Editing

Aloha,
I did do some editing in Win XPO and would like to do the same in Fedora. I will check out those links you posted. I have a Canon S230 and do the video capture thing as well and then put the clips together. I would liek to be able to do transistions and titling. I am new to this area so I am not sure what to use. Thank you for posting the links.
Mahalo,
Edward

Good luck with your editing. I'm most curious to read about any views you may develope on the individual packages you try.

I tried to use Kino for my Digital still camera (a Canon S700 which has a movie mode) but discovered Kino is limited in the input formats it will handle, and it does not handle the .avi movie format of digital still cameras.

I tried avidemux, and its a great package. Note avidemux does handle my Digital still camera's format, but avidemux doesn't have precanned transitional affects one can input.

So I plan to try out some other packages, but I would like to benefit from the experience of others, if possible.

Source Forge & Fresh Meat non-linear editor pages

A couple more URLs with links to Non Linear Editors.

Source Forge video non-linear editor page:
http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/t...p?form_cat=256

Fresh Meat video non-linear editor page:
http://freshmeat.net/browse/256/

Does anyone have experience with any of these packages that they care to share?

Digital Photos

Aloha,
Check this out:
http://software.newsforge.com/softwa...2.shtml?tid=75
It is only to arrange digital photos in an album but it works really well and sets them up like a webpage. I am doing the whole family album that way and am going to post on our own net apache server at some point. Wow! I love Linux.

Thanks. I've never felt the need to create a digital photo Album, but thanks for the URL. I may try it some time.

On the subject of video editors, I found a good multimedia forum on gentoo. I am a SuSE user, and I have never used gentoo, nor do I have any plans to ever use gentoo. However I have found there are several interesting historical threads on the gentoo multimedia forum that are generic across all linux variants:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewforum-f-33.html

For example:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t...t-avi+dvd.html

There are so many posts in the gentoo multimedia forum, I find that I need to do an advance search confined to the gentoo multimedia forum, in order to find specific posts of interest. But there are some gems there.

Rather than spend too much time installing applications, only to find out they don't really do what I want, I decided to try out the applications which are already on a Live CD.

Some live CDs that I have been considering are:
Dyna:bolic - It can be found on:
http://www.dynebolic.org/

Pho - It can be found on:
http://garbure.org/pho/
[Pho is a live CD based on an old Knoppix verson] .

mediain linux - It can be found on:
http://www.mediainlinux.org/

Does anyone have any experience they wish to share on these distributions (and the applications on these distributions)?

[Edit1 - added mediain linux]

Thank you for important information here and on other forums as well. I have been looking for a video editing software and I have installed Cinelerra. I would be interested in LiVES but I can't install it on SuSe 10.1.
