I tried SuSE-9.3 and SuSE-10.0 on different PCs. The SuSE-9.3 version that I was able to install (via rpms) was too old a version of dvdstyler to be very useful. The latest versions would not install. I have not been successful yet on SuSE-10.0

One of your main problems is sound.

Your sound has to be 48000Hz in order to burn a DVD. I never tried to encode in 640x480 before either but I don't think it is a problem. Because I encode DVD's with VCD Video and DVD Audio. This enables me to burn 450 Minutes on one DVD. When you are backing up VHS it is senseless to use anything higher then VCD.
Some good programs to use are Avidemux for Linux and TMPEGEnc for Windows. Linux has another really good app called KVideoEncoder. Depending on your distro if it uses rpm binary packages then try using rpm.pbone.net. It has a cool function that will search your kernel modules for depencies so those programs install and compile correctly. Now all I really use is mencoder, KVideoEncoder, and DVD Styler.
Avidemux also has automatic functions to allow you to encode a video in DVD, VCD, SVCD, IPOD, PSP, and many other formats including custom. Although its shortcomings is you have to encode a video twice if you want to join a DVD Audio with VCD Video.
You also want to split the audio and video/audio using a De-Multiplexer so you can join the two with DVD Styler. TMPEGEnc works under Wine for the MPEG Tools functions really well and it has a DeMultiplexer. KVideoEncoder also has a DeMultiplexer.
Once you figure out how to work DVD Styler it is really easy, just drag your Video down, then drag your Audio file down if it is split. It automatically splits it for you but takes longer. The only thing is you have to have the proper MPEG Video stream that is recognized by DVD Players(VCD, SVCD, DVD), and of course a 48000Hz audio stream only.

Try rpm.pbone.net to search for your dependencies.
