noatun (if you're a KDEer) and mplayer are about all that I've ever heard mentioned that would be decent alternatives to xmms.

I got tired of the all the distro's that are a pain to run mp3' ect so I just switched to SuSE 8.2. In my opinion only, out of the box its much better than RH 9 or Mandrake 9.1 for mp3 or realvideo etc... On other non-video/music issues its more the same than different.

Running mp3's is not a problem, everything works just fine, I am just annoyed of that player and want something else.

XMMS has been nothing but a pain for me.... Back when i was using just the ac97 module on a el' cheapo sound card, the thing ran fine.

Now that i have a A7N8X MotherBoard with Soundstorm technology, Surround Sound, Dolby Digital, etc... The thing just wont run. It would get a minute into a song then just die. I uninstalled and recompiled, now when ya start a song, it runs them in Fast Forward, takes about 3 seconds to play a 5 minte song.

Seems like they just don't support it the way they used to....
Usless, I am sticking to Mplayer.

Are you sure you are using the right plugin? Check under Options -> Preferences for the output plugin.

Gmerlin is also quite good, but my fav. must be xine and mplayer..

That rythmbox looked quite nice, I'll have to check that one out
