Mac vs Linux

I will be a future physics grad student, which operating system is better for programming and stuff like that..if linux which distro is better??

For sound applications, no contest, Mac is for you (how I hate to say this!). Mac has some of the best sound software available, whilst although Linux has the potential it doesn't have the tools (yet!). For example, I eventually managed to get Band in a Box running on my Debian box, but it took a lot of effort and luck (in that it's one of the Windows programmes that works with Wine.)
However, for programming Linux is a natural choice: all the compilers and stuff like that are of an outstanding quality and totally free. Solution? Buy a Mac for the sound applications and install Linux as a dual boot.

Oh lordy! This question again. There isn't a best distro, it really depends on the specifications of your machine and your tastes. I personally love Debian; others think it's dull and difficult. Some adore Suse, I think it's all gloss. You have to experiment I'm afraid!

I've just noticed that I've answered two different questions from two different posters! How I hate it when threads are hijacked in that way! Everything gets too confusing for my little brain!
