Some of the games you mention have native linux client and server versions others will need to run in wine/winex not _all_ windows games will run in linux. gentoo is the best gaming platform. you will not get more performance out of your system with any other operating system and thats a fact. its allso very easy to isntall any aplicaitons. the actual gentoo install is found to be tedious and annoying by some.. i think its fine.

I personaly found Slackware the most tweakable.
But I would suggest that you learn more about linux and use it on a daily basis before starting playing with kernel compilation and system tweaks.

No. If you use a distro like Fedora you can download the RPM and install it with rpm -Uvh wine.rpmIs wine hard to install?
But then you'll need to edit the configuration.
www.winehq.com has some tutorials about it I think.

well, i'm running RH9 on a P$ 3.06GHZ HT, with 1GB memory,and Geforce 4 ti 4600 ultra 128mb DDR videocard.
On this system i play UT2004 regulary, all settings are set to highest, and it runs perfect...
only thing i had to do was install the nvidia driver, for the rest everything is right out the box...

gonna have to back variant on this one, GENTOO IT!!!!!!!!! you want power GENTOO IT ifyou want hardcore gaming power, avoid the bloated mainstream distros (mandrake fedora suse) look into gentoo or slackware. (btw, fedora is just the opensource community version of redhats after 9.0)
