    Best video encoder

I'm wondering what the best video encoder would be to produce 3-4 GB avi's from a DVD using transcode. My options are divx4 and 5, xvid1-4, fame, mpeg4, and h264. I can use mpeg4 and h264 with either the ffmpeg module or the af6 module (not sure what the difference is). Thanks in advance.

But how's the quality? I've been using xvid4 at a little over 4000kbps for ~3.5GB (0.5 bpp), but I'm wondering if I can get a higher quality rip of the same size using a different codec.

i can't tell the diff between that bitrate and the dvd itself, and I'm obsessed with HD, but its gonna depend on the size of the screen its being watched on since i'm using a 720p hdtv to watch these movies, so the scaling isn't a big deal for it, I can see on a screen where the res is higher than 1360x720 that it would be noticeable

I watch the movies on my computer at 1024x768 and with some of the videos, I can see its a bit blocky and/or blurry sometimes
