I hate to say this, but it's anoter thread about there being no sound
Running Slackware 12.2 with 2.6.27 kernel. Brand new ASUS K50ij-RX05.
lspci tells me that my audio device is:
alsaconf agrees. I can run alsaconf just fine, and I can run alsamixer, where I get a bar labeled Master and a bar labeled PCM. Contrary to how others have described AlsaMixer according to Google, I cannot seem to change anything by pressing the 'm' key, but my left and right arrows move between the Master and PCM columns, and I can adjust the lengths of the bars between 0 and 100.00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
My module for sound seems to be snd_hda_intel, and I have heard that to make that work, I need to modify the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound, so I tried three different new lines for the file, each time adding the line and rebooting my system.
options snd-hda-intel model=XXX
I tried basic, ultra, and 3stack for the XXX in that line.
Normally, when I run something like Xmms, the program looks like it's playing music even though I get no sound, but each time I reboot after changing /etc/modprobe.d/sound, the program gives me an unhelpful error message, which then disappears if I change the output plugin for Xmms, though that doesn't make sound play, either.
If I run alsaconf again, /etc/modprobe.d/sound reverts back to two lines:
Any ideas on what to try next?alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

When you run alsaconf do you hear the test music??
- 07-26-2009 #3
Run aplay -l (its lowercase L) to see what chip you have. Then Google for that chip in conjunction with ALSA. Certain versions of ALSA having bugs affecting certain chips is not that unusual.

When I run alsaconf, I do not hear any test music.
aplay -l results:

There is VIA support under Intel HDA. Maybe it's not enabled in your kernel configuration?

Below, I have the output from lspci -vvnn and cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#*
I noticed on lspci that :
Is this a problem? I remember something similar from when I was trying to get my wireless connection to work (and updating the pci.ids file and making sure I was using Ath9k driver seemed to help there, though I am not entirely sure everything is working on that yet.)Controller [8086:293e] (rev 03)
Subsystem: Santa Cruz Operation Unknown device [1111:1043]
If the problem is kernel configuration, I don't really know where to begin fixing that.
Here is /proc/asound/card*/codec#*:

Well, I don't like this Santa Cruz Operation Unknown device [1111:1043] thing.
Maybe you should open an ALSA bug.
http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-...s/alsa-info.sh
This script collects ALSA info from your computer for reporting a problem.

I'm running PClinuxOS with kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3 #1 SMP. I have a similar sound card:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 03)
And the driver is also the snd_hda_intel one. I have the following dmesg error in my case:
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
hda_codec: Cannot set up configuration from BIOS. Using 3-stack mode...
Which results in a working config and snd card. Go figure.
So I would venture that the suggestion of checking the support for your particular version of card is best... the driver is correct for your card, but support looks buggy.
Good luck mate.Respectfully... Sarlac II

If the problem is support, what would I do about that? I am a little too new to this to know off of the top of my head. If it wouldn't take long to say, telling me might save me another day of searching the internet for a solution. Thank you for your time, in any case.
From running the also-info script (and please note that I do not have internet working on my Linux-running laptop yet, so it could not fix any problems by downloading anything--I am typing this on a different computer):

Well, what I meant is you should go to Main Page - AlsaProject . Lots of useful information there. In Advanced ALSA Users section you can click on 'I found a bug!', create a new account and report your problem. You can search the bugs, too, to see if something useful pops up.
