Allowing mutliple programs to use sound devices at once
how do i allow, say, xmms play music while and can still hear the sounds of tux racer and that sort of thing? or when i use gaim, and gaim makes a noise, xmms say "cant play file: sound device being used by another program" or something like that, and it aggitates me, how do i change that?

I think that with most soundcards/chips at the 'cheaper' end of the market the driver system can only connect one input to the sound device at a time.
Most distros have OSS and ALSA running at the same time, and I think TuxRacer uses OSS. So set XMMS to use ALSA and see how it goes.
For real full duplex multi channel audio you may need to use summat like JACK.
