ID3 tag editing question?

Hello..

My question is this: Right now if I rip CD tracks and move them to my MP3 player all the tracks on the player are listed as ending in ".mp3 (eg "01-songtitle.mp3"

Can I use an ID3 tag editor to edit the tag so it displays on the player as just "01-songtitle" without the .mp3 file extention?

I just need a simple editor, nothing fancy!

You can edit ID3 tags in Rhythmbox and Amarok. Both are default music players of Gnome and KDE respectively.
Or use EasyTag. It is available in Universe source of Ubuntu.

Thanks. Yes I have instaled Easytag but I couldn't see a way of saving the song title tag without the .mp3 extention. However, that said I'm totally new to it so I may just be because I'm not be familier with it!

OK maybe I'm doing something wrong here, which is certainly possible .
But I've played around with Easytag and I see no way of editing so that the song shows up on my mp3 player without the ".mp3" extension on the end of the song. This is not the end of the world just a little cosmetic issue. However, if I'm wrong please let me know!

OK, most player software will show the song title as given
in the ID3 tag, or at least has the option to do so. Otherwise,
it falls back to showing the file name.

The file name is where the .mp3 comes from. Check the options
on your software. You want the name from the ID3 tag instead of the
file name.

Well I'm begining to wonder if my player doesn't support ID3 tags. (just a basic sony walkman flash drive type.. nothing fancy). There seems to be no option on the player for selecting between displaying file name/ID3 tag.

I tried editing the ID3 and saving using Easytag and then tranfering to the player but its still displaying file name. (possibly I didn't do it right) But the end result is still filename on the player.
