    Computer Games Very Slow


    Hello everybody,

    I am very new to Ubuntu, and Linux in general. I have been a long-time user of Windows XP, but I switched to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a few days ago.

    I downloaded the game Nibbles from the Ubuntu Software Center, and it is very slow. One time today that game worked perfectly, but all the other times I've tried it, the frame rate was very slow, about 1 frame per second or less. I also downloaded Neverball, which has a slightly different problem: it runs smoothly for a few seconds, then everything freezes for a few seconds, then starts running smoothly again. I tried adjusting all the options in the Options menu as low as they could go; before I did this, the game would be frozen more than it would run, but with these settings, the game runs for slightly longer intervals than it is frozen. I also downloaded Blender (for 3D modeling and animating), and I cannot get past the splash screen.

    I suspect that the problem is somehow related to programs that use OpenGL, because I know that Neverball and Blender use OpenGL, and I suspect that Nibbles does, too. Here is some commands I ran in the terminal to get some information, just in case it helps:

    I think half the problem is that your computer is quite low spec, and you are asking it to do far too much all at once:
    Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.50GHz
    Your cpu is "quite" old, and while it will still work, it is can't do half the things that a modern processor would be able to do, without taking a ton more cycles to achieve it.

    Radeon Xpress 200M
    Your gpu is similarly very low-spec. If you check the charts to see where it falls ( Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart : Best Graphics Cards For The Money: March 2012 ), you will see it not far from the bottom

    Only a few things you can do... upgrade your equipment, limit yourself to really old games which won't tax the system too much, or install a much lighter-weight OS (Xubuntu, Puppy, etc, there are many).

    I hope no one considers this Ubuntu-bashing, but my experience is thus:
    Games that were slow or did not work at all on my computer when I used Ubuntu, work perfectly with Debian. (Linux games and Microsoft games with Wine.) So I am not sure how much can be done to make your games perform better. But then I am not a game expert.
    But that is my experience. Yours and others' experiences may be different. I hope things work out for you.

    Ditch 'buntu and install something much lighter.

    The games you refer to are not very demanding so the hardware should be able to run those nicely.

    I know next to nothing about "lightweight distros" - I would just install minimal Debian, install a window manager like fluxbox, blackbox or openbox... and take it from there.
