I don't think the problem is that simple - I think my upgrade to KDE3.3 hasn't worked properly. I think I'll just wait for a stable 3.4 and see if that cures it. My 3.3 is release 3.3.2 level "a" which maynot be a stable version.

First, enable sound and use XMMS to verify sound is working (search www for alsa)...
using Knoppix 4.0, after enabling sound with alsa, this worked:
KDE Start >>
Control Center >>
Sound & Multimedia >>
System Notification >>
Player Setting (button) >>
Use External Player >>
Player: xmms (just type "xmms" in the field rather than browsing for it)
