Sound notifications in KMail
Can anyone give me any pointers how to turn notification sounds on. Have checked out the control centre. The test "play" button doesn't play the selected sound.
I have full mp3/CD playback with Amarok/XMMS/Kaboodle etc. Also the little tinkling sounds in GAIM work too!
Thanks
Andy

Thinking about it, notifiction sounds have stopped since I upgraded KDE from 3.2 to 3.3.
What could have changed?

In the sound section of the KDE control center, there's a place where you can choose the sound to play when you recieve e-mails in k-mail. Make sure that sound is playable. Also, there's an option in k-mail that desribes what to do when new e-mails are revieved. Make sure it's also set to notify you audibly.

Thanks for your response Jeremy - sorry I didn't reply, I've been away.
I have checked the settings in KDE control centre and Kmail (many times!!). All looks to be correct. In the control centre there is a "play" button to test the sound that you have chosen. This doesn't play the sound!. Have checked the sound files using XMMS - they work fine.
I am at a loss now as to what else to check, and will probably have to live without any notifications. Irritating! They definately worked in KDE3.2.
Could anyone tell me which package/KDE module is responsible for notifications, or which sound engine etc - anybody else had this problem?
Cheers

In the same window, you can set an external player. The internal player does not seem to work.

I've tried that.
Have just tried again - setting it to use Amarok. Nothing I'm afraid.
Thanks

I think there must be something screwed up with Control Centre, which must have occurred when I upgraded to KDE3.3
Thanks

andysdp,
This sounds like your KDE notifications are turned off. Try these steps:
Go to the /home/<your-user-name>/.kde/share/config directory.
Look for the knotifyrc file.
Open the file with an editor.
Look for the [StartProgress] section within the file
Edit any "false" entries to "true"
Save and close the file
Log out of KDE
Log back in
These steps have worked for me in the past.
HTH,
Skid
