I don't run gentoo, so I'm not sure exactly what is in portage. It's either the installer, or the client without the game data files. Doom 3 is a commercial game and although you can download the client, you still need the PAK files from the CDs in order to play it. The same is true for Quake 1-3 and Doom 1&2.

it will probably install the full game.... BUT it wont work... it will ask for the CD or similar.
If not, it's probably just a demo of the game."I am not an alcoholic, alcoholics go to meetings"

Yeah, I tried to emerge some other game (heroes3) a couple of weeks ago, and it downloaded the sources and everything but then asked for the CD...

If you've got the windows version on cd, just emerge doom3. That will download and install a base version of doom3 then you have to copy the pak files off cd. Simple

Yeah, it's like CoffeeMonster said. When you emerge doom3, you just emerge the doom3 engine. The actual game files you have to pay for, e.g. buy the game on cd. The source for the engine, though, was released some time ago under the GPL, along with the quakes, and ut2k4.

- 04-22-2005 #9Actually, although the source code for Quake 1, 2 and Doom 1 and 2 were open-sourced, the code for Unreal Tournament and Doom 3 remain closed.
