If I can offer a suggestion about compiling mplayer? I've found that you can compile it successfully and it still won't play dvds. It seems to need a lot of features enabling (without or without the gui).
Features that can be compiled in start with --enable, so I usually open the html version of the manual, hit Ctrl.+F and enter --enable in the dialogue box. Then I find all the features and try to compile as many as possible.
Try it with cpu runtime detection: that works for me.

i suggest downloading totem for all your dvd needs. I can't seem to find a better, more simple player out there.

i did the upgrade to suse 9.3 and compile the mplayer form sources and it... works but frame per frame but also i have a info in console that my cpu is to slow O_o ??how could it be if i have 2.66 pentium IV and 512 ram and plenty of space on my hda?
