route music to all 6 speakers

i'm looking for a software that allows me to route the stereo output of some programs (espacially XMMS!!..and mplayer) to all 6 channels, so all the 5.1 system is gonna be used....

is there any software to do that? a soundserver that can do that would be best...

otherwise i'm gonna build some program myself... i have enough time in the holidays... well if i send some music to the subwoofer, should i filter out anything over ... well... 100hz or something like that, or does the subwoofer do it by itself? or dont i need to care at all?

    thx for all answers..
