UT2K4 woes in SuSE - solved

Here is where I am at
    Code:
    $ut2004
WARNING: ALC_EXT_capture is subject to change!
Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual

    History:

    Exiting due to error
I was under the impression that SuSE auto configures your video card drivers for you. I have an ATI Radeon 9800 XT, should I just go ahead and install the drivers from the ATI site and risk screwing my whole system? I have gotten UT2K4 to work under Fedora Core 3 before so it is possible, what should I do in this situation? Thanks.

EDIT: here is a bit of glxgears
    Code:
    $glxgears
    1056 frames in 5.0 seconds = 211.200 FPS
    598 frames in 5.0 seconds = 119.600 FPS
    839 frames in 5.0 seconds = 167.800 FPS
    1080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
    1080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.000 FPS
    960 frames in 5.0 seconds = 192.000 FPS
    960 frames in 5.0 seconds = 192.000 FPS

Just got through playing an intense round of deathmatch

I just had to install the fglrx drivers in init 3 and configure using sax2 and restart X by issuing init 5 and I was in. I launch a Konsole and fire up UT2K4, w00t. The only thing is that it is stuttery at times and hiccups occasionally, not to where I cannot play it but enough to make me really want to go out and buy an Nvidia card
