u might wanna look into mplayer. Though i guess u will need the codecs for the mov file, and also the codecs for what you are converting to.

err, i dont know about mencoder (mplayers encoder)

Well, i haven;t had any problems encoding to DivX or XviD using mencoder. I think the codec packages come with codecs for encoding and decoding, so (usually, as far as i know) if u can play it, u can encode it) I haven't installed any particulay divx codecs specifically for encoding.

Why convert it to another proprietary format? Convert it to Ogg Theora.

i think xvid is an open format
