No sound with Mepis
I can't seem to get sound working with Mepis, I have generic Dell speakers and a generic i810 sound card...

The i810 driver should have detected and configured automatically. Is it a desktop or a laptop? I have seen that chipset appear not to work in laptops if the external amplifier switch in kmix/alsamixer is not turned on.

It's a desktop. It worked with KNOPPIX before but I don't remember if I had to do anything special..

Have you tried the alsaconf, alsamixer, alsactl store route? I am positive that will work.
