Yeah, quake 1 is retro enough, so is 2, but not 3. I am thinking pre 1995 stuff 11 years old is old enough game-wise...

It is impossible to pick for me. I love my retro games, but am also very much into new games as well. I'll go from playing the original Civ to Civ 4 all the time, or I'll play SNES and then go to Battlefield 2. It all depends on my mood.

This is exactly my experience too, except I would have to say I prefer Civ 2 over the original Civ (mainly because that's the first one that I ever played). I really wish they made Civ 4 for Linux. It has now taken Civ 2's place on my list of all-time favorite games (right up there with Tetris ).

Anyway, I just voted for Modern because I love games like Civ 4, the KOTOR games, the new remake of Sid Meier's Pirates!, the new series of Prince of Persia games, and soon I plan on getting Star Wars Battlefront II. I love retro games too, like the original Tetris, Pitfall, Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3, and Super Mario World, Dr. Mario, Civ 2, and the first two Prince of Persia games, but I tend to spend more time on modern ones.
