Myself I prefer GAIM for IM. Try installing it through yast instead of some RPM, it should then install ssl and all other needed dependencies for you.

gaim and kopete are on the suse 10 install cd's but not necessarily installed by default. they're easiest to install because you can just go to YaST and install them from the cd.
