Photoshop for Linux

I have a forum buddy that's ready to take the Linux plunge, but he would like to know if there are any programs that are like photoshop. ( I guess more advanced tha Gimp) He also wants to know if there is a player or codec that will play .wma files. Also, he says that linux does't recognize PVR(a program to record TV shows) is there anything like that? And last but not least is video editing software for Linux, is there a program? He's using Mandrake 9.2. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

For playing .wma files I use mplayer.
And for video editing you can use cinelerra.

If you can't find a good photoshop alternative that is better than gimp (don't forget to check gimp 2.0, it's new (if it's out yet), but it might have the functionality you're looking for), you can run photoshop through wine

Photoshop 7: (1) Imageready doesn't work; (2) Cannot resize tool window. Other than that it should work fine.

Photoshop 6: Should work fine.

Photoshop 5.5: Should work fine.

I use xine to play WMA and WMV files. It works fine.

cinepaint --used in many high budget movies... i.e. scooby doo, hairy potter, etc... (branch of gimp)

shake -- although this isn't free, Its the best compositing software I've ever used!

xine --can play anything!



I think linux is missing a killer video editor like avid xpress or FCP ....(except in the ultra high end market).

Lets just hope adobe makes the linux plunge too.

the latest gimp is about the best ur gonna get....though there is a front end for gimp that mimics the look of photoshop called gimpshop....

otherwise use wine or crossover office to use win applications (word, photoshop, & a few others) on linux
