myth, pvr-500, sabayonlinux not working

I have a hauppauge pvr-500mcs and SabayonLinux 3.3 (gentoo based/compat) and am using mythtv but i cant seem to locate the capture cards. it is supposed to show up as two pvr-150's. the example shows /dev/video0 and /dev/video1, but they don't exist. i have tried "ls /dev/ >> file" with and without the card installed but the results are the same. i have followed myth's instructions to the letter. is there a kernel module that is not plugged in that i don't know about?
