RuneScape - the massive online adventure game by Jagex LtdMicrosoft isn't evil, they just make really crappy operating systems.

There are some free ones, but my favourite is "A Tale in the Desert".

I never said that RuneScape wasn't free. However, it isn't completely free, as you have an option to pay to unlock more content. A Tale in the Desert is not free and it is completely different from RuneScape and it's pathetic goals/quests and community.

I just said it was pathetic. If it's not as pathetic as the games you mentioned, then it makes those other games even more pathetic.
Not to get too offtopic, I will have to mention that you can run WoW with Wine or Cedega in Linux too.

Hopefully this doesn't count as "illegal" activities.
You could always try a private server.
Some of the RO private servers are pretty good.
And Runescape is for nubs, imo.

I tried planeshift for a very short while. Better graphics than runescape, not as good as wow, but the game itself was lacking pretty much everything fun. Even the other players were a downer.
Second Life is also another to add to the list of games I dont care for much (although any regular player will insist it isnt a game, it is indeed a second life)
But hey, just because I dont like them dosnt mean they arent worth mentioning here.
Edit: also, both of the above games have native linux clients.Living the digital dream....
