Hello,
I'm quite new to linux and loving learning about it. My problem is that when i try to watch a youtube video flash crashes. this never used to happen and i've read around and can't find a solution
I'm using firefox and Ubuntu. it sometimes does not crash in epiphany browser
I'm sure its really simple so Apologies for asking - usually i find a way around such a thing

Need more information:
1. Versions of Ubuntu and Firefox.
2. Is the OS 32-bit, or 64-bit?
3. Is Firefox 32-bit, or 64-bit (if Ubuntu is 64-bit).
4. The flash plugin you are using (name and version).
5. System video hardware used.
6. Video driver used.
I have been playing flash videos on a number of different versions of Linux, Firefox, Chrome (32 and 64-bit versions) for over 3 years without any major problems once I got the correct plugins and mix of software/drivers, etc.
Ubuntu 10.10, Firefox 3.6.15
32 bit
shockwave flash 10.2 r52 (is that what you mean?)

You might want to update the flash plugin - current version is somewhere around 10.3.162 or higher. Also, you might want to make sure you have the "official" Adobe plugin. Anyway, if the OS is 32-bit, then Firefox has to be also. On a 64-bit operating system you can still run 32-bit Firefox, which does better with flash videos than the 64-bit version does, even on a 64-bit OS.
To find what the video hardware is, go to a command line and execute the command: sudo lspci
Then post the output back here.
For the video driver, run the command: sudo lsmod
And again post the output back here.
how do i know if im on 32 or 64-bit?
tried updating but couldn't dont know what i did wrong how should i go about it?

To find out if you are running in 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, go to the command line and execute the command: uname -m
If is says x86_64 then you are running 64-bit mode. If is says something like i386 or i686, then you are running in 32-bit mode.
Ok. You are running a VIA chip set for video. There is a generic video driver running, and a via_agp driver running which I think is the via video driver. However, from my investigations, the via_agp driver is a character driver, not a video driver. I find that the via video driver is named viafb. Anyway, go to System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager. In the quick search box enter "via video driver". You should see several listings, including one called "xserver-xorg-video-openchrome" - see if it is installed (the box will be dark). If not installed, click on it to install the driver. After that is done (if it installs) you will need to log out and back in.
One final thing. You might want to try the google chrome browser. I have had good luck with that dealing with flash video.
