PlanetCCRMA is a project to create an audio studio using Fedora. Their repository has packages for most Fedora versions. Installing it in Fedora 12 was not quite as easy as the older versions, so I documented the process.
Planet CCRMA at home
Here is the process that I had to use to install in Fedora 12:
1) Installed Fedora 12 from DVD, without Pulse Audio! I also selected to install JACK and the YUM GUI yumex. Yumex is similar to the Synaptic Package Manager that can be used with apt.
I then updated after the install
2) Added the RPMFusion repositories.
3) Add the CCRMA GPG key. I had to downloaded it to my computer first:Code:su -c 'rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm'
Then install it:Code:wget http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/apt/configuration/all/RPM-GPG-KEY.planetccrma.txt
4) Add the CCRMA repository to YUM. This is done by installing a rpm file.Code:gpg --import RPM-GPG-KEY.planetccrma.txt
It then gave me a GPG error!!?? But it still installed the package.Code:rpm -Uvh http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/mirror/fedora/linux/planetccrma/12/i386/planetccrma-repo-1.1-2.fc12.ccrma.noarch.rpm
5) For previous version of Fedora, there is a mega-package that installs all of the packages needed to turn this into the PlanetCCRMA distro. This seems to be missing for Fedora 12. I downloaded the needed Fedora 11 rpms, and was able to install everything that way. First get the three needed Fedora 11 rpms, and save them to a folder that I named "rpms" (how clever of me). Run these commands for that:
Code:mkdir ~/rpms
Code:cd rpms
Now install them with this command:Code:wget http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/mirror/fedora/linux/planetccrma/11/i386/planetccrma-apps-2007.11.22-1.fc11.ccrma.i586.rpm http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/mirror/fedora/linux/planetccrma/11/i386/planetccrma-artwork-2007.07.19-1.fc11.ccrma.noarch.rpm http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/mirror/fedora/linux/planetccrma/11/i386/planetccrma-menus-2007.07.19-1.fc11.ccrma.noarch.rpm
This installed these packages:Code:su -c 'yum localinstall planetccrma-apps-2007.11.22-1.fc11.ccrma.i586.rpm planetccrma-menus-2007.07.19-1.fc11.ccrma.noarch.rpm planetccrma-artwork-2007.07.19-1.fc11.ccrma.noarch.rpm'
As you recall, I already had JACK installed, so it updated it. It appears that everything installed OK. I will reboot, and see what happens.Code:=================================================================================================================================

OK, it rebooted. That's always a positive sign!
It doesn't seem to have installed the real-time kernel yet. That may come with an update, so I'll try that next.
To install the real-time kernel, run this command:
The default Fedora installation gave me a PAE kernel, which I really don't need. So it installed a PAE real-time kernel.Code:su -c 'yum install planetccrma-core'
Unfortunately, rebooting into the new kernel resulted in a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I took this to mean that the driver for my nVidia 6800XT card wasn't loading. I hadn't yet installed the driver from the nVidia web site, so what was it using?Code:===================================================================================================================

I was able to reboot into the original kernel. I checked the modules that were loading, and found that it was using the nouveau driver. I saw that there was an update available, and that it was a newer rt kernel. So I installed that one and hoped that it would work better.
After a reboot, I still had the blank screen. I tried to manually load the nouveau driver, but the error said that the module wasn't found. It must not be compiled into the rt kernels. I rebooted into the original kernel again.
I now downloaded the proprietary nVidia driver from the nVidia web site. To install it, you need to first install a few things. This would work on most Fedora installs:
But this failed to install the rt kernel source. Instead, this command did that:Code:su -c 'yum install gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers'
I changed run levels and installed the driver. After reboot, I was greeted by my desktop, and a shiny new rt kernel.Code:su -c 'yum install kernel-rtPAE-devel'
So, keep in mind that you may need a graphics driver, and plan ahead for it.
A little bit about the JACK audio server.
You should start the JACK control panel:
Applications>Sound & Video>QjackCtl
It will start the JACK control panel.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s.../snapshot5.png
In the past, I found that these were the settings that worked for me:
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...jack/jack1.jpg
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...jack/jack2.jpg
But, Rosegarden still won't play. And if JACK is running, I can't play any mp3 files. As soon as I shut down JACK the mp3s will play.
Since I have an Audigy2 sound card (Sound Blaster), I see that I need to install sound fonts. I found some on my driver installation CD, and set Rosegarden to use them. I followed the instructions found here:
http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/tutor...html#2_1_3_1_3
I found two soundfont files on my CD, and tried them both. I also downloaded the soundfont file from Personal Copy, as suggested by the How-To, but still no sound.
Before I could even load the soundfont files, I had to install the soundfont loader.
Code:su -c 'yum install awesfx'
Your suggestions for using the F11 install utility is brilliant. And fixing the video driver cured my blank screen. I'm amazed. But I still can't keep jack running. Maybe you can give me a hint?

Failed to start server
I am not very knowledgeable on the workings of Jack. I eventually got sound out of Rosegarden, but I don't know how I did it!
I don't start the Jack server with terminal commands. I have the Jack Control Panel starting up at boot. The command to start the server is in that setup. The Jack server will only run when an application that requires it is started. When the applications close, the jack server stops.
I think that you can put your startup command in the "Server Path" line.
I was going to recommend that you join the PlanetCCRMA mailing list to ask this question, but I see that you already have.
As someone pointed out on the CCRMA mailing list, it looks like you're having ffado trouble. I don't use firewire, so I'm not much help here, but I'd suggest that you search around for help with that. I know I've seen a few threads on the CCRMA list related to ffado, so if you haven't been watching the list for long, maybe try searching their archives.
Good luck!
