No CD audio output on Dell X300 Laptop

Hey all,

I'm running Debian Sarge, Kernel 2.6.9 on a Dell X300 (BIOS A08), and when I play an audio CD, there is no sound output. System sounds work fine, as do MP3's, but there is no audio for CD's played in the DVD+RW drive.

When a CD is inserted, gnome-cd starts and begins playing the track, but as I said, no audio. I've tried other multimedia players (xine, xmms) but the same thing happens.

What else should I try?

Check to make sure that all connections to the CD drive and the sound card etc. on your motherboard are in there tight. Also, which sound system are you using? Open Sound System(OSS) or Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA)?

Yeah, the CD is plugged in tight - I can mount data cd/dvd's and read/write to them without a problem.

Under Multimedia systems selector, the only options are OSS or Custom. Both return an error when activating the test:

Failed to construct test pipeline for 'OSS - Open Sound System'

The only sound module loaded is:

snd_intel8x0m

When I run alsaconf, I get a list of errors:

modinfo: could not find module snd-opl3sa2
modinfo: could not find module snd-cs4236
modinfo: could not find module snd-cs4232
modinfo: could not find module snd-cs4231
modinfo: could not find module snd-es18xx
modinfo: could not find module snd-sb16

Not to bring this off-topic, but, how did you get your sound card working? I have a card which also uses

and it won't work at all.

I'll find my install notes (offline at the moment) and post them up for you on Monday (today is Friday in Aust). From what I remember, it was just a couple of extra debian packages.

Thanks a lot, cos I modprobe'd it, but the sound still wouldn't work. I used both ALSA and OSS drivers
