Sound problem in debian
I have debian sarge 3.1 and whenever i try to open a sound file or play a movie or anything like that, there is no sound.
i did manage to get some system sounds to play for some reason (like little wav files), but anything else all i get is a horrible squeaking crackling buzzing noize or that is has a problem with /dsp.
I apologise for being vague but any ideas would be appreciative.
first, what are you using for sound, OSS, ALSA, etc.....
what kernel are you using (2.4, 2.6)..... you can determine this using
i am using kernel 2.4.
how do you determine what you are using for sound?
if you are using 2.4, then you are using oss
take a look at http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/sho...18&postcount=2
The reason I suggest switching to alsa, is because it has much better support
so basically i could either install alsa modules or just upgrade to kernel 2.6.
I was thinking of upgrading the kernal anyway so i might try that.
Should i upgrade?
I would upgrade.... I am using 2.6 kernel
you can upgrade by doing
You can find the different names kernel-image-2.6
apt-get install kernel-image-2.6-blah
