Anyways, what I've noticed on every distro I've tried is the inherent problem of getting 2 progs to output sound at the same time.
Slackware had ALSA installed so playing a cd meant all notifications from amsn queued up until the cd had finished then output in a stream.
Stuff like MDK has the aRTS thingy running which seems to hog the sound device to itself.
But what I've noticed is that if I don't load alsa or if I disable arts then multiple progs can access me sound card with no problems.
I dunno if this is cos there's a default installation of esound or oss which then kicks in. Maybe it's summat else?
Any ideas/pointers/etc about how sound is actually meant to work in linux?
