The build log is /var/tmp/portage/x11-misc/shared-mime-info-0.22/temp/build.log. So you can use the more command in the terminal window, or use a text editor to open it.
more /var/tmp/portage/x11-misc/shared-mime-info-0.22/temp/build.log
nano /var/tmp/portage/x11-misc/shared-mime-info-0.22/temp/build.log

Exclamation No Sound using Alsa

Now, I am having a problem with getting Alsa to play any kind of sound. Whenever the reboot starts up and prompts into login i see that the "emu10k1" module is initialised and started. but, no sound at all. I have configured Alsa in the kernel. And i did the make && make modules_install and i also ran the " cp arch/x86_64/boot/bizImage /boot/Linux-2.6.22-r9 and rebooted afterwards and no sound. can someone give me some pointers here on this issue. thanks

You need to know which soundcard you have, or which sound Module you need to use. Use the lspci command to see which chipset the soundcard uses, then use Google to find out which module you need to load. When I had this same problem, I just recompiled the kernel one last time and included all the Alsa options as modules, so my sound worked after that.

that's great. however, I am using the SB0400 Audigy2 card. And I just remcompiled the kernel with the emu10k1 module but, when i start alsamixer it;s picking up onboard sound by nvidia. which btw, can not here no sound either. but ill look into this wiki once again. try to find out how to configure it.

Have you tried using alsaconf? You might need to merge alsa-utils first. Alsaconf will try to detect your soundcard and load the correct modules.
