Hi.

As a newbie I have been following a few of the Gentoo Wiki's trying to get my Atheros PCI card working, to date I have not had any success.

Main document was: HOWTO Atheros Wifi Card / MadWifi Install - Gentoo Linux Wiki

I downloaded /emerged wireless-tools & DHCPCD. Then emerge -p -f madwifi-ng madwifi-ng-tools, then emerge -p -f madwifi-ng. I moved a copy of this file into /usr/portage/distfiles and then ran emerge madwifi-ng madwifi-ng-tools.

I them went ot the Madwifi site and went round in circles trying allsorts.

When I run lspci I recieve the following:

00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co Ltd RTL-8139/8139C/813C+ (rev 10) - My 10/100 Ethernet Card

00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros COmmunications, Inc AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01) - My Wireless Card

An ifconfig shows:

eth0 - Ethernet card which was previously working before I commented out the lines for Eth0 in my /etc/confg.d/net. I

l0 - My loopback address

If I do a iwconfig I get:

lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions
sit0 no wireless extensions

Any help would be appreciated. I am struggling to find out what I need to do to get back on track.

Did you do
modprobe ath-pci ?

Thanks for the help. When running modprobe ath_pci I receive the following:

Warning: Error inserting ath_ha1 (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r8/net/ath_ha1.ko): invalid module format
Warning : Error inserting wlan (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r8/net/wlan.ko): invalid module format
: Error inserting ath_pci (/lib/modules/2.6.22-gentoo-r8/net/ath_pci.ko) : invalid module format

It looks to me like there was something wrong with the emerge.
Is there anyway you can just use tthe wired connection to do the emerge of madwifi? Instead of copying files to distfiles.

When I get that type of problems, I usually get the tarball from the Madwifi project and then compile it myself.
It seems to work for me when Portage don't behave correctly
