You're on the right track, gnuageux. Thanks for your response, but that problem was resolved (it was posted a month ago). The problem was in understanding the round-about way that grub works not only in how it references drives, (it doesn't count CDROM's?) but also in that what it calls "root" is neither "/" nor "/root", but instead is "/boot" in the usual configuration (see my message of 23-Jul). It would be good to know if there is a straightforward guide to grub, digestable by those of us not fluent in geek-speak.
