My linux box is currently emerging my system junks, but i was wondering, when that is complete, can i simply install gnome by

emerge gnome

or does gnome use some oddlytastic name. I know that kde is just

emerge kde

but i am switching from kde to gnome and updating to the 2.6 kernel on gentoo.

Yes. The gnome and kde ebuilds basically emerge all of the separate packages for either of the two DEs for you.

Just did it meself recently.

$ emerge gnome

et voila!

instead of asking a question like that why not just do "emerge search gnome" or "emerge -av gnome" instead of posting a question just for the sake of it ;)

Also you can look up packages here http://gentoo-portage.com or here http://packages.gentoo.org/ just search for your package or package parts to see the exact spelling

esearch is better for searching, actually, as it keeps a database with your packages (update it with eupdatedb) and greps that. Much less time and resources used.
