That documentation is over 4 years old and deprecated because that step is included in the official handbook for the official livecds. It has been listed in the official docs for over a year now that I know of, maybe longer.

If you just wanna install it....

When you insert the liveCD, and they prompt you for the boot... type gentoo nox.

Boot: gentoo nox
*********

Where nox stands for No X.This will start your gentoo installation without the Xserver. Once you've completed your installation, all you've got to do is emerge gentoo-sources, recompile your kernel with the graphics card's support, and emerge <your-graphics-driver>. I guess that should solve your problem.
