For some reason, GUI installers fail quite often when I try to use them, so I prefer the text installers and find them easier to use. However, I have a feeling that most users think the GUI installer is easier to work with.

That said, the Gentoo text installer is very easy to use if you follow the Gentoo Handbook to the letter.

Personally, I don't like the gui or text based "automatic" installers. I prefer the manual command line "follow the handbook" way.

I think both of the "automatic" ways are buggy anyway.

I have grown very fond of using Knoppix to do an alternate install, so I can do other stuff while Gentoo compiles for a few days. I have also used the GUI installer, but it suckeths.

I have tried both the GUI and ncurses-based installers, I have not been able to get a workable system out of them yet.
I always end up going back to using the handbook to install Gentoo.

So, should I go to the older 2005. gentoo ver only beacuse it has a text based installer?

I never had much luck with the Gentoo GUI installer, but have successfully used the text based method on many occasions. There is a text based installer for newer versions as well. You can install in text mode by getting the minimal install disc.

It doesn't matter which version you use, just as long as you use the current online handbook.
Even in the 2005 versions they had a notice telling you to use the current online handbook.
You don't even have to use a Gentoo cd, you can use any livecd that has gcc installed.

Personally I can never get the GUI or text based installers to work, EVER. I always just use the handbook as a point of reference (Once you've installed Gentoo manually a few hundred times (Which you will) you barely even look at it.

Gentoo still takes 2 days being up compiling stuff to build a gentoo system?? I remember that last time i tried installing gentoo that was about 4 years ago, took 2 consecutive days, resulting a successful install but unable to get a GUI lol. If u gentoo can be installed without having to compile everything from scratch and chrooting and doing all that stuff. I would use gentoo

I want to be able to install gentoo in 30 minutes.
