Do you boot to runlevel3 or 5? If you boot to 5 then you can change your window manager using rc-update to add the appropriate init script. (Ie kdm, gdm, whatever) If you boot to run level3 then you want to edit your ~/.xinitrc so that it starts the window manager youd like.

O, no worries, i got this all worked out a while ago, the thread is a little old. I was lost in the gentoo dir structure. Happly home now!
