It don't get more basic...

From the Gentoo Linux 2007.0 x86 Networkless Handbook (4. Using the Dialog based Gentoo Linux Installer):

The top of my ncurses screen shows "Gentoo Linux Installer" with a line inder it. No way to tab or arrow anywhere but the basic options in the middle. F1 does nothing but make the screen flash for a brief second.

What am I missing? Is the "detailed help" the few sentences in the middle box?
