How to transfer the BOOT CD Gentoo OS to my machine

Is there a simple way of installing the GENTOO boot CD Linux onto my machine so that I can use that as a starting point ?

I have tried the various options to install and either the eth0 does not work or the Window manager fails to work.

But the Boot CD works perfectly...

So my thought is transfer teh working CB Gentoo Linux OS to my machine AS-IS and use that as teh starting point -

For example I wnat to go to the resolution Windows gets (1900x1200) and twin Heads (displays) Then I want to install VMWare...

Then I'll be a happy chap...

All help appreciated.

My advice would be to follow the handbook and install it through the command line, because honestly, if you can't install it following the handbook, you won't be able to maintain your install.

Gentoo is a "do-it-yourself" distro and the base install does not have a window manager or anything except the basics. You will boot into a command line when you are done.

The main purpose of Gentoo is building the system from scratch (almost).
Gentoo user's should enjoy the challenge of building a working system/components.

I revel in the challenges of getting my Gentoo system working exactly how I want it.

If you want a simple installation Linux then you should look at binary Linux distro's.

Cool

Thanks guys - I have tried the command line install - and following the handbook - but it failed to get the network working (no eth0 but just lo) but Xwin fine. So i tried again a few times to no avail still failed to identify the hardware.

I tried the GUI install version and that got the network i/f working but not the Xwin.

The current Boot CD gets everything working fine from the CD including Xfce4 / GDM and networking. I have a 3 year old D900T Clevo twin 3.8Ghz CPU with 3Gb Ram and 600Gbyte Disk and its a shame just to run Win Xp on the poor machine - How can I let it suffer before its put out to pasture?

I thought the simplest solution would be to get the BOOT CD Linux image cloned to my hard drive and use that as a fall back as well as a base for building custum versions ie lean and mean versions of Linux when my experience level matures...

At least I would have a versatile fail safe system I could also expect to work if I moved hardware platforms...

I have instaled JFS as my main disk structure ext2 for boot.

Main problem I have is dealing with the CD's SQaush? filing system.

Alternatively:

Where can I find out where all the key Xwin files are located on the Boot CD as if I know that I am sure I can simply copy all the relevent files to my earlier installation and so I'd have networking and Xwin.

The main problem with the handbook is that it expects the user to know everything about what he is doing - the ability to clone the boot CD Linux Image to a target machine as a starting point for further customisation.

Can I use redhat to do what I am saying and then switch to gentoo for any customisations?

Many thanks again for your thoughts.

You still aren't getting it. If you can't follow the handbook to do the install, you WILL run into trouble later on because of not being able to maintain it.

What you need to do, is find out what module your network card uses and then load that module on your install. The livecd uses genkernel, so you could try that in your hard drive install.

The underlying problem is that you aren't familiar enough with text configs and the file layout to fix the problems that Gentoo presents. If you can't get either installed and working on your own, then they will break later with a kernel update or some other update.

Do this:
Code:
lspci
lsmod
You do both of those commands from the livecd. We can help you, but you have to be willing to learn the hard way to do things, because Gentoo will not be gentle with you in any way.

I presume then that the Gentoo Install CD is a stripped down shoe horned version of Linux with no upgradability.

Your wired internet card (eth0) will use the r8169 module. Make sure to either build this module into your kernel, or build it as a module and load it at boot time. Then, you will need to follow the handbook and add net.eth0 to your default runlevel, and if net.eth0 doesn't exist, then you will need to create it.

Your wireless card will be a little more in depth, but it should be do-able.

The Gentoo livecd is not a "stripped down shoe horned version of Linux with no upgradability" it just isn't suitable to be installed onto your hard drive. It is a specialized build built just for a livecd.

I am not trying to be arrogant or anything, I just want you to understand how important it is to know the inner workings of your machine and operating system so that you can maintain and configure your install.

If you would like to stick with gentoo, then may I suggest Sabayon to you. It is a distro that is based on Gentoo, but it is much more user friendly. If you wish to stay with Gentoo, then I will help you as much as I can, but you cannot expect Gentoo to do ANYTHING AT ALL for you.

Why do you want to use Gentoo ?

This will give us an idea about what you want to achieve and if Gentoo is the best distribution for you (as it sounds like you are expecting something more like Fedora Core or Ubuntu).
