[SOLVED] kernel panic, can't find root fs

i'm getting something like

kernel panic-not syncing VFS:unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

when I boot my new gentoo installation.

ext3, ext2, and Nvidia specific sata drivers are compiled into the kernel (not modules) and I for the life of me can't figure out why this kernel wont find my drive.

and Idea why I would still be getting this error message??

try passing your root device name while boot option as kernel parameter
Quote:
root=/dev/device
example
root=/dev/sda1

does it work?

I really can't figure out what the deal with it is. I've booted gentoo before on this exact PC, and I dont think I did anything different.

So I figured it out. I had ext3 and the nvidia sata drivers compiled in, but I didn't realize that the scsi disk driver was a module ..... I feel like a noob now

Oh well, at least it is working now.
