startx turns off my monitor

Hi, i`m trying to get ATI radeon 4850hd to work but, seems to work and don`t know what else to try. If i run "startx" my monitor gives me "no signal" and after I press ctrl+alt+backspace I get "input not supported" and have to reboot becose ctrl+alt+backspace or ctrl+alt+ + don`t work. My monitor is acer p193w and has only a vga output, so I`m using dvi-to-vga convertor.
