Hmm, were you using the GUI installer ?

I normally install from the Console, and I have in the past encountered problems with the GUI installer.
Using the console commands always works.

I agree...unless they improved their latest release, the 10 year release, is that what you downloaded? If not, then at least use another OS to install Gentoo, by using this guide. I usually use the Knoppix installation instructions but you can use any LiveCD to achieve the same results, there is also instructions for installing from an existing Linux installation too.

Hi,
I don't recommend you 2008.0 live cd. The 2008.0 releases are deprecated. Try new livedvd 10.0 or minimal installation.
Try this link
I hope it will help you.

Gentoo still provides stage1 and stage2 tarballs. This is for development purposes (the Release Engineering team starts from a stage1 tarball to obtain a stage3) but shouldn't be used by users.

Can you post the output of fdisk /dev/xxx command with p option ?
What is your netbook?

The Live DVD of Gentoo 10.0 does not include an installer. You could use it to do a regular Gentoo install. But better off using the minimal cd.
