Wireless on IBM Thinkpads?

I am interested in buying a notebook for running Gentoo. I heard that some Linux works with Intel Centrino wireless chipsets, so would that mean Gentoo supports wireless on an IBM Thinkpad? Would anyone recommend a specific Thinkpad model?

The general rule is that if somethings works with one with one distro it will work with all others linux is realy just the kernel then with modular packages added or not added to make diffrent distros
