The problem is in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and is simple to fix first there should be listed a default depth at the first block in that section kinda like this example
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "NVIDIA GeForce"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24
then in ordor to run the desired depth you must add it to the depth 24 subsection or whatever you choose (but the 24 section is the best res) something like this
Code:
 Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024 " "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
and to make it defaut place it first in the line of usable modes

Thanks for your reply, but unfortunately this did not work. I noticed these error messages though, any ideas?:

(EE) I810(0): No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth.

no screens found generally means that your monitor settings are incorrect, work with your vertical and horizontal sync settings...to get these right manually run xorgcfg, which usually detects these pretty well, then you can manually add other resolutions and your video card to the xorg.conf file that xorgcfg creates...plus you will probably have to edit the mouse device to /dev/input/mice

Still stuck on 640x480

Thank you for your response but my refresh rates are correct as I got them straight from the technical specifications from my monitor manual, and the mouse directory is already set to the directory you mentioned. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Well, if you directly copied that xorg.conf, at least your Horizontal sync settings are wrong, you have them typed in incorrectly...missing a space

This hasn't solved the problem. I think it might have something to do with loading the agpgart module.

That is usualy an effect of other things in the config being wrong not a cause
