could not start the Display Manager
after "emerge portage", system responds there are 86 config files in /etc need updating and 95 config files in /usr/share/X11/xkb need updating , I run the command "etc-update", everything seems fine, but when I reboot Gentoo, I can not enter Gnome and get the error message "could not start the Display Manager", so what can I do? thanks a lot!

You probably overwrote /etc/conf.d/xdm when doing etc-update.
A rule of thumb: note down on a piece of paper or a notebook every single file you edited by hand under /etc. So, you know that that file needs special attention when you are doing etc-update.
Edit that file, and change DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm" to whatever your preffer (probably gdm).

I had solved this problem by input DISPALYMANAGER="gdm" into /etc/rc.conf
